Community Theatre Group

The Crowborough Players are now more strongly branded the community theatre group we always have been.
At the group meeting on the 3rd July, members voted to use the 'community theatre' moniker in marketing and publicity.

The group also decided to agree a fund-raising strategy for Crowborough's new community facility; the strategy will be discussed at the next meeting; 4th September 2008.

Auditions - What to Expect

Crowborough Players Community Theatre Group auditions are nothing like ‘Britain’s Got Talent’! They are very informal, usually consisting of people sitting in a circle, taking turns to read through a script.

When all the auditions are over, and the Producer has met and heard everyone who is interested in a part s/he will fit the people s/he has met with the characters in the play. S/he will then contact you to ask you to take part, in the role s/he has selected.

Not everyone can get a part every time but this doesn’t mean the Players don’t want you! There may:
+ just not be enough parts for everyone who is interested in taking one,
+ just not be a part which suits you,
+ be people who get offered parts first who have missed out on parts in productions before and have been waiting to get one.

And we still want you to join in the fun! Please be involved in back stage and front of house work, set-building, make-up and wardrobe! These tasks are vital to the performance and loads of fun to do.

How the Group is Run

It’s a team effort! Every paid-up adult member of the Crowborough Players (see How Much Does it Cost below for details on membership costs) is, by default, on the Committee. Members can be as involved as they would like in the running of the group. Every member present at meetings has a vote on decisions made in that meeting.

The office of Chair is revolving, the role taken by any paid-up adult member of the group, preferably one who was present at the last meeting. The other group officers are facilitators, rather than managers of the group – involved in community theatre for fun rather than to run a committee, so meetings are very informal – although the constitution is followed!

How Much Does it Cost?

Membership
Adult Members pay only £15 per year which largely covers insurance costs. For this, members are not only insured but, by default on the management committee of the Players, shaping what we do, and how we do it. Members can be as involved as they want to be with the running of the group.

Full-time students over 18: £7.50, under-18s (in the panto): £1.*
*(Any 15 to 18 year olds performing in more shows than the panto upgrade their membership to full-time student membership by paying an additional £6.50.)

Additional Costs
+ For productions, cast members are asked to pay for their script (where commercially bought). This is around £10 to £15 and passed on at cost inc p&p.

+ The Players have an extensive wardrobe. However, for productions, cast members may need to provide some additional costume elements for their characters. (Usually from charity shops or their own wardrobes!)

+ There is a group make-up box, which is paid for by group funds. However, some actors prefer to provide and/or do their own make-up.

Paying for Productions
The last two productions cost £1,200 each to put on.
As productions are funded by ticket sales and a raffle, cast members are encouraged to contribute to these....
+ Sell tickets to friends and family.
+ Provide raffle prizes.

Net Revenues
If a performance earns any revenue, this is put towards the general costs of running the group; make-up, lighting, props, hiring a meeting hall, insurance, auditing of accounts, as well as maintaining a fund to subsidise future productions (if necessary).
